Today, I noticed a slight change in the way my subs were handling. I can't remember what they sounded like before, so I can't really say theres a big difference. They just don't sound the best.

So, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what blown speaker sounds like...so when they go....I'll know for sure.

Thanx everyone,
Chad

Usually when a speaker blows...it doesnt sound like anything. It just doesnt make any noise.
Do you hear any noise coming from the sub other than music? Like a crunching? Basically anything non musical coming from the sub is bad.

A blown speaker is really either:
Frying the voice coil
or
the cone separates from the voice coil or spyder

A fried voice coils makes smoke and smells, when a cone separates, it sounds like it is popping or hitting or whatnot. Another possibility would be if the winding on the voice coil unwound and scraped against itself and the magnet.

Or the glue let loose and its no longer moving totally linear....

What kind of sub?

I have a pair of Pioneers and a pair of Polk Audios.

The both sound fine when their being played quietly. The pioneers pop when they are turned up a bit. And the Polk Audios just sound like their not taking as much as they were before. Its irritating listening to it because they just wont hit like normal subs. I notice it more now than before. I just wish I had enough money to buy new everything. All of my stuff is really out-dated/hand-me-downs.

The Polk Audios = 10", I think they're 100w RMS.
The Pioneers = 12", 130w RMS, 500w MAX, Their in a bandpass box but sound worse in just a normal "ported" box.

OR..there is a loose connection in the box. Take the sub out and examen it. Make sure all of the connections are tight, then play the sub again. You'll be able to notice if the cone detatched from the spider and if you fried the voice coils you would've smelled it.
