View Full Version : Blocking (Sub)Bass Frequencies

I am planning on moving into a house that I'll be renting for some time. However, I don't want to be a nuisance to my roommates, and more importantly, my neighbors. So I was thinking of sound "deadening" my room to prevent the bass from escaping.
How should I go about this? The only possible idea I have now is to create a "room-inside-a-room." One site I found said that high mass is the only way to block low frequencies. Thus, I could double up concrete backer board, as per their suggestion. But is this the best way to do it?
I don't have the option of modifying the current walls. I.e. no nailing into them or ripping drywall out to replace it.

well the foam blocks with 60 degree triangles seems to work wonders.
If you did the entire room with it you could scream your heart out and nobody would hear you, probably...
I did it in an MDF box lined with it. Couldnt hear me outside the box...

If you wrap up some insulation into sheets and put them over the walls, that might help you a bit.
I did such except I had them stapled to wooden boards for sound control. I wrapped them in cloth.

Foam and lead. Lead has a very high mass, foam can help absorb some sound waves.

I don't think I could get lead in big enough sheets at a cost-effective price to make it work.
FWIW, I'm not really worried about anything but the low frequencies.

they do make studio walls but to be honest... that stuff is massively expensive you might be better off with some carpeting on the walls and then some foam over that.

i've made those studio walls before. for a portable one, we would build a frame out of 2x2's and put wire in between to staple insulation to, then lay in several layers of quilt batting and cover in burlap or felt. you could probably make some 4x8 panels like this and set them against or hang on the walls.

They already wonder. I'm just doing this so when we go in my room, I can close the door and say "You can't escape now..." all creepy like.

That's a good idea, I was thinking of make the walls more 2 dimensional, but a 3 dimensional frame would probably be better so I can use multiple types of sound deadening in there.

Drill small holes and spray in expanding foam into the preexisting walls?
