I'm trying to build an amp rack for these Dimensions: 10-13/16 x 14-13/16 x 2-11/16" ....can someone explain to me what the dimensions mean as typed above? I can't tell by how it was typed. What is the depth/length/width?

It's just like that for anything you see in that manner, FYI.

Just a note for building amp racks. Build them as small as possible. Otherwise there is to much air to move.

Just don't let any plexiglass touch the amps :) My plexi was about 1/16 of an inch from my ARC 2500XXK and the heat from playing it for 15 minutes melted the plexi. Then I touched the amp and I now have a terible burn mark on me. It was well over 150 degrees. damn amps lol.

Thanks for everyones replies. One question though..what does air space have to do with the amp's performance? I mean there are a lot of people who dont have amp racks. Can you explain that please

Ok you enclose the amp in a bigger more open amp rack. Add fans, it takes more fans to make the air move, it makes it harder for the air to move over and through the amp as there are easier paths it can go.

Now make it nice and tight. THe air doesnt have as many places to go, so it goes where you want it to.

I would say leave about 1/2 -3/4" above your amps- this is the more critical area. Keep the ends as short as feasible. :sub:

Thanks for the clearing that up Ryan.

Whatever fans you buy, just look to find the highest cfm you can find.
A pair of 80mm fans would work well (>30 cfm each) or a single 120mm fan with 75+ cfm.

You can't really use just a single fan. You need a fan moving air into the amp rack and then a fan moving the air out of the amp rack. A single fan will just blow the hot air around.

Not if you make a port hole on one side and then have the same size with the fan on top on the other side. I don't think you've seen some of those more powerful computer fans. They move quite a bit of air. 120 mm is a big fan.

Fans are cheap. Just buy the ones for the computer and hack off the ends.

I would put 2 on each end, thats under $30 for all....

can you use 12 volt computer fans? For an amp rack

For future reference, the reason computers have a power supply is for changing AC current into DC current. Computers (the internals) don't run off AC current.
