Sony is a multi-million dollar company. Their focus is to make money and expand, like any large corporation. Their products work, and they tend to get better every year...however, small(er) companies like Adire and many others are much better, because they are started and ran by car audio hobbiests themsleves. They create a product that they would want to buy, and they make it very durable. They build specific products for specific needs and setups.

Sony just wants to make money, smaller better companies want the hobby to continue to get better and break records. It's all goal oriented.

Most importantly, Sony cheaps out on everything giving you an unreliable whole. They slap on this perposturous power handlings and ratings only to make you buy it. I've had a Sony head unit. The difference is night and day between that and another brand's.

simply put, Sony's car audio line is very poorly made with high failure rates and poor reliability. They're very cheap though, and made to be "pretty" to attract those who don't bother to do their research before buying, and buy soley based on name or perceived reputation because Sony has been around for decades.
Their home audio is really for the most part middle of the road as well, on par with other companies who ride on name recognition such as Bose. I'd highly recommend steeering clear of anything for the car from Sony presently on the market, or made in the last 6 or 8 years.
Their old Mobile ES products weren't so bad, but those are ancient history now.

i nearlly bought a sony system from a guyt.. he was selling 2 Xplod 12"s, a 1000w sony amp, a box, and all the wiring for $200.. i got in his car and listened, and i could tell it was worse then other systems i've heard, but it would have beegn good enough for my first system.. didn't buy it though. I think im going to go with Alpine Type-R 12"s

i would go so far as to say anything 10-13 years. in 91-92 sony began an initialive to "use x%fewer parts" in their car audio products. that just equated to less money spent on each item and yielded an increase in profit. in '95 i snatched a mobile ES casset deck on clearence from crotch fealed. even it sucked. while prior to that time the ES was indeed pretty good. they also had some gold ES amp that was pretty tough as well, but my memory fades.
for the large corporations it's generally quantity not quality, which is most typically the inverse of smaller internet companies.
if it's bright (except ppi art), with light (except mcintosh), or chrome (all) i pay it no mind. now i understand that eclipse (fujitsu 10) is also going the route of the large corp by way of crotch fealed. while i have been a fan of the Ti and amps, i fret to say the least.

Sony Moble ES XM 260G and 2100G, those amps were bad ass. Their only downside was they were very rare and very expencive.

Infinity is quite a step up over sony in my opinion, ive had problems with their low line subs failing on me, but ive come to love the sound quality and spl i get from both of my 12s. I may get 2 more of the same 12s so I can use my jbl 1200.1 amp sitting in my basement Im probably gonna get infinity kappa 6.5s for my coaxials. I realized ill be happy with a middle of the road system and I think infinity will do just fine for me.

Yeah I would have to say mid 90s, like 95 or so. I know I have seen that amp too, but I Don't remember the model. Definatly a Mobile ES
