Eclipse EA4000 Amplifier
5.25" Rainbow Profi CS 230's

Game plan is stealth yet beauty.

Looking to corner load the car, drivers corner. I am going to glass the sub in. Have a small plexi window on the bottom and an acrylic mirror to see the rear of the sub.

Or just glass it in same corner, no stealth.

Not sure yet.

Problem with doinbg this stelth is to get grille cloth that matches the carpet in the rear- which probably cant happen...

So Im about to eat and get to work!

Ok the subs is going to down fire. The port will come out the side. This will be stealth except the single port...

r u mounting comps in stocks or you gonna fabricate something?

Ryan from Ohio
09-17-06, 10:46 AM
Will be mounting them in modified stock locations, I believe.

The doors house 4x6's currently and I know I will need to modify. Im about positive I will have to modify the tweeters in the sail panels.

I will probably go ahead and cut up the plastic and purchase replacements from the junkyard just in case.

Ok got the radio today and all the stuff to install it.

I pulled it out of the box to give it a quick bench test with the power supply.

First thing I notice the buttons on the left dont light up as they should.

Try to put a CD in and it wasnt having it... Wouldnt eject anything either...

Moving onto the tuner. Ok no sound coming out of my speaker...

So lets see, Im just a tad bit unhappy right now. $55 and no workie... Advertised as working, non DOA yadda yadda...

Im just going to go buy a new one! F this shiznit!

I got the amp in today!!!

I was so excited I heard the front door open and I kumped up and poped out it like a jack in the box! lol

I had to take the rear cover off and send a pic into amp guts! THere wasnt one there, but will be now!

THis amp is ver refined looking! Nice carbon fiber accent, very classy!!!

Came in and she was as new as new can get! THe protective wrap was still taped on!

Ok I spent some time with the head unit today.

The seller has said he will refund my money and to just keep the deck as its not really worth sending out for repair.

At this point I figure I dont have much to loose... So I tear into it!

Ive found that one little spring was missing after removing the front cover. I removed the CD mechanism to look for the spring, nadda. Couldnt find it anywhere. So I start to look in the packagin.box he sent it in. AMongst the peanuts was a small spring!!!

So I put the spring on where it goes, put it back together far enough to test.

Plays CDs now! There is AC voltage at the RCAs, no output thru the internal amplifier however.

One thing I will not, that there were two sets of wires soldered on. And they simply cut thruough the wires... Wonder if it grounded them out and fried something...

Dunno...

I gave up on the internal amplifier...

Im going to eventually get another radio to put in the Alero, dont know when. Until then, it will do.

But to say the least havent been messing with the install. I took on another contract and its got me way tied up. Actually I shouldnt even be here right now...

Ok, slight change of plans.

I was looking more into the trunk, and to be honest theres really no good way to stealth it.

Im going to just go ahead and build up a 6th order bandpass for the single 8" sub.

I got some fiberglass cloth today, 24" x 36". SO whatever I bo a combo of the box and or amp rack will have a top layer og Carbon Fiber to set off the amp ;)

Now I just gotta figure out what resin I need to use to make it all ncie/shiny/CLEAR.

And I just got outbid on another denon made Rockford HU on e bay...

Shit, I put $415 on it to. I cant believe I got outbid, thats a ton of $$$ for it... lol.

I figured it wouldnt break $350 area...

Seen one on their buy it now for $900...

lol, right... :rolleyes

As most know I picked up a McIntosh HU.

Today I designed my 6th Order Bandpass.

Here are the pics of it. Intent is to test the box FIRST, then if its good get a plexi window cut with my LOGO in it ;)

Yes, Bill isnt the only one with CAD skillz ;)

Anyhow, 2" ports, three on the rear chamber. They are spaced to come up to where the rear 6x9s were in the alero. So its ported pretty much into the cabin ;)

Will be building three boxes tomorrow, weather permitting and Im feeling decent...

The graph is very promising.

The problem with this sub is they tout it as a perfect small box sub. WHen modled it doesnt have a very good curve in sealed. In ported tuned low with a SMALL box (28 Hz, .25 cubes) it looks like most subs sealed...

Trying to get gain results in a nice spike follwed by a DIP bellow 0 dB...

Know about these optical cables the are used on the HU to the DAC?

I got a cable, I see where it plugs into the dac (obvious) but I dont find it fitting any of the others on the HU...

grrr

Ryan from Ohio
11-03-06, 04:03 PM
OK nvm I found it...

There just some other cables on it Im unsure what they are for...

Also, is the optical out for both channels or just ONE???

I take it I will need at least 1 set of RCAs from the HU directly to an amp/eq. THen a set from the DAC to the amp (like a 3 foot set or less)?

OK, not NEAR as loud as that 12" box I did. Really not loud at all :(

I guess it IS a single 8" sub.

Ive never built/seen/used a box like this before, 6th order bandpass.

Its buite strange. The lower FSs the air really comes out the front side (small chamber). The higher FS the air is on the rear chamber... Strange.

Anyways Im going to also build a single ported box for the sister to the one in this box. WHen I install I will try both boxes and run with whats best. Maybe add the other sub and simply buy another amp for my highs (EA2000).

Fit kit installed.

DC-DC convertor installed.

Pass door panel and comps removed. I will need to refab the sail panels- hack the shit outta them. The 5.25" speaker thats replacing the 4x6 will need an entire housing fabed up. I will need to get some assistance angling the speakers/tweets. Got a game plan though.

All in all the about 3 1/2 hours I got into this, much is done.

Tomorrow weather permitting I intend on getting the box in and amp rack designed.

What do you plan on doing for the mounts?

Ryan from Ohio
11-12-06, 05:55 PM
glass for sure.

I will have to add 4 holes into the doors, attach via sheet metal screws and PL glue. Seems to be the glue of destiny!

Should be a relatively easy project. Make two sets of baffles. Mount the bottom baffle. Get help aiming the baffle, then hot glue it together. Fleece then glass it. Done.

Very cool looking amp... cool looking head unit, but I still maintain that the radio isn't going to work on that guy - you'll have to let us know on that! :D

I've played with the 6.5" version of those subs actually - pretty remarkable guys. That thing SHOULD get pretty damn loud - you know, for an eight anyway. If you've got it tuned to pretty much stay above 40hz (probably have to, like most eights) - maybe 40hz to 80hz - you should be able to dial in a pretty good amount of dB out of that and still stay pretty flat.

If you can't, I'm currently running a dual-eight setup that is a dual-chamber tri-vented enclosure, that bears some resemblence to a bandpass box in that it has two differing volume chambers and two discrete tuning frequencies.

What I like about a DCTV box that is a benefit over a bandpass box, is that with a bandpass box you yield the displacement that comes from the combination of the two ports (or one port, for a 4th order BP ;)). With a DCTV box, you yield the displacement of the sub, AND the two ports.
And - with a DCTV box you inherently get a frequency response that compliments the cabin gain of your interior.

I'll put it to you this way - my dual-8 DCTV box is able to reach at least 130dB, likely more - it's loud enough that it can cause ear pain on heavy bass music, certain rap songs... I'll have to break out the meter one of these days.

Just a thought - if that bandpass box isn't quite cutting it, I'm sure I could give you a design for a DCTV box to fit that exact same space - with that box your sub would also be firing out the top, if that would work. Just a thought, might be fun to play, if that box isn't going to be locked in there too permanently. ;)

Ryan from Ohio
11-13-06, 03:22 PM
The box will slide up to the front of the foldown seats with the ports firing through the 6x9 areas into the cabin.

Ya at 40-70ish Hz this thing is pushing some air.

I may have to add a third port on the front.

Ya I will have a look at that design. I have TWO of these subs. Ones already in that box (can come out). I got power for two if I find another amp for my comps (EA2000).

Now why wouldnt this Head Unit work, or are you just saying that? Kinda a bit nervous as this is the second time someones said something along them lines. I paid a pretty penny for it :( It better work with my system!

geolemon
11-14-06, 09:57 PM
It's not that the head unit won't work - but the radio part of it.

Radio frequencies in the United States are broadcast on a different format and different set of frequencies than they are in Japan.

Wasn't this the HU you bought, that was an OEM piece in a car only sold in Japan? If so, it's got a Japanese radio tuner in it, not a USA AM/FM tuner.

But hey, who knows what you'll pick up on THOSE frequencies, if so! Maybe our government uses those frequencies for confidential communication channels. :p
You don't have any FM modulated goodies, like an XM tuner or iPod, right? If so, probably no big deal.

RCAs arrived today.

When stinger gives you a length on RCAs its rca tip to tip! I figured it was the length of the wire before they y off...

Still will work though.

Searching for a way to run the RCAs/Opticals thru this car...

This I found a place. Entire passenger side is ripped out, glove box and all... lol

This car isnt to fun to play with under the dash! Especially trying to go from the radio to passenger side :(

BTW the Stinger Exper series are pretty nice looking RCAs. THe cable is a bit bland being just rubber. THe y off is sexi black chrome. Same with the end. BTW they are twist lock. SO you plug them in, give em a twist and they wont slip off!!!

All thats left tomorrow is installing the comp set, finding a ground, building an amp rack, mounting and hooking that shiznit up!

geolemon
11-19-06, 06:14 PM
Did you have to cut?

Anything that's not a removable panel I would have to think twice, three times, four times... a beer on the couch... wait a week... think about it again, six times... ask mentors how they would handle it... and even still probably couldn't bring myself to cut it without a solid plan established for restoration. :p

I groan when I even hear about people who cut factory wiring harnesses (who hasn't heard of a wiring harness adapter these days?), so cutting a dash support would certainly get my warning light blinking. :help:

Ryan from Ohio
11-19-06, 07:31 PM
Oh ya, cut I did!

Thats about what I did Chris. I played around a bit, tried thinking out a few scenarios. Just kept coming up empty handed.

THe plastic I trimmed away really had no real use. THe stock unit has that tang that went into it- thats it.

The metal piece I cut had no real relivence either.

All it did was giving it someplace to screw down to on the hind end of it.

http://caraudiocentral.net/ryan/images/alero/darnedbar2.jpg

There areas on the inside of the lines is kinda where I trimmed. Just up to the opening. I also cut the flat piece of metal in the back. Again, it just providied a place for the plastic to bolt to in the rear.

Talking with the people @<hidden> aleromod.com it tends to be a somewhat common event...

geolemon
11-20-06, 05:41 PM
Yep, that doesn't look like a piece of structural metal. GM head units have always had that little nipple sticking out of the back of them - I see that they still do. :p

When I installed my CD changer in my rear passenger armrest, I had to trim a little bit of metal also, down to about half the width that the strip of metal bracing used to be... I ended up reenforcing it by welding a piece of small angle iron behind it.

It's not so much that "cutting is a sin", but cutting without thinking is.

I might still maintain that cutting factory wiring is a sin. ;)

I made the blanket statement about "cutting" [anything].

I just wanted to differentiate - cutting door panels I don't consider a sin (one would assume the cutting was the outcome of a plan ;)), cutting metal isn't something to be done without extensive planning, and cutting wire is something that nearly any plan would inherently lead you away from doing - and therefore I would generally (never say never) consider it a sin. ;)

There's a big difference between cutting metal vs. cutting wiring - even though cutting anything should never be done with a plan (there is that common tie :p), I just didn't mean to make a blanket statement about "cutting".

Pretty nice for $75!

Looks like it will do what I want. I was kinda holding out for a 1/3 octave, but this jumped out at the right time and has a nice look to it. Ive seen this same unit selling for $350 new, so it cant be to bad of a unit! lol, and a good deal!

The 6th order is currently out of the car. Its getting carpeted. Also Im going to be building a new box for its sister sub. SO I can switch it up a bit if I need more trunk space. Might go with a small ported.

Rainbow Profi comps. The good ones with the CAL25 tweeter ;) The mids you cant see, they are fitted in the door via custom made fiberglass pods. Yes I know they are rough. I need to finalize my imaging after and RTA session and fill it/paint them.

Thats a 6th order bandpass housing a single 8" Tang Band subwoofer.

Fuses for the DAC and the EQ. I take no chances with this level of equipment!

RCAs are Stinger Expert series throughout. Big 3 wiring is in progress- need motor- ground.

And thats that!

Ya...

I lost my one cheap 12 today. It lived a loud life and died doing what it did best.

It died rather strange though... It must short when it extends or something. Reads good ohm @<hidden> rest but causes the amp to go into protect when it starts to move... Oh well, back in the box and to Wal Mart to get my $15 back :p

I have a friend tossing around the idea of a 6th order bandpass on a 8 inch w7 would you be willing to share some advice on it with me?

Good luck! Certain subs react well, others- not so well ;)

Honestly, at this point Im not liking it.

I spent a whole minute or two tuning it, I need to spend a bit more time.

The system lost all its "warmth".

Not sure about the 8, but the 12 and 13W7s aren't the best design for a ported or bandpass box. IMO, I wouldn't try it, but I would have to check up on the specs before I give you a final answer.

if it likes sealed then a fourth order would be right up the alley. on top of that unless your friend has extensive knowledge of physics and accoustics i strongly recommend against it. bandpasses are very temperamental and slight changes can cause catastrophic results. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE! 90 percent of all woofers i have blown up were bandpass designs!

Ok,

Installed the HD Radio. Installed a Metra Universal amplified antenna (yes it sucks so not using it!), bondo'ed the sail panels and painted.

I want to install the other amp and W6V2 tomorrow. Maybe later tonight, dunno
