well, i inherited this old pioneer ( which is in good shape and puts out decent power, however the left channel has a horrible cracking sound most of the times the unit is turned on, if i switch off speakers, and wait for about 5 min the crackling goes away, but untill then, im afraid ill blow something

I'd check your speaker connections behind the HU and at the speaker. They may be touching some surrounding metal. I'd also go over your ground for the HU. You may need a new spot for that.
