The average person wouldn't think it's possible for 8's to get loud, especially at an affordable price...but the RE8 does just that. When my RE8 arrived at my door I noticed two things. First, it was obvious that this little thing weighs a good amount. In fact it was as heavy as one of the 12" MTX 4000's I had layin around at the time. The next thing I noticed was how well this thing was packaged. It came packaged in two seperate boxes..between the big and small box were tons of foam disks to keep the package that the actual sub was in from being damaged. I can only describe it as taking excellent care on Visionary Audio's part. Quick shipping as well. I bought this sub with intentions of using it temporarily until I can Afford a Tempest setup. I found a good deal on an MTX 311D on ebay and decided to use it to push the RE8. I made my box much larger than it actually needs to be..to make it easier to fit port..I decided to risk it because I don't plan on running the 8 for too long. All in all, it was just a fun project for me. The box ended up being around .9 cu ft after displacment..tuned in the low 30's. I used pvc for the round port, because I thought a thin slot port might not have the smooth air flow a round port would have(it's also easier in such a small box). I'm very confident that this sub will perform just as well if not better in its reccomended size box with only 100 watts. After wiring everything up and setting the gains, I was shocked by the output. I only expected this sub to be slightly louder than a pair of 6x9's..boy was i wrong. If I didnt know what was back there..I probably would have guessed a dual 10 setup with some sort of entry line subs. I've heard a pair of 10" MTX 6000's and this 8 gets almost as loud. 2 of them would blow the 10's away for sure. SPL aside though, this 8 has excellent sound quality..even ported. I can put in a country cd or some Red Hot Chili Peppers and really enjoy the music. So if your lookin to save some room and not kill the wallet..the RE8 gets my vote. Major Thumbs up.
