Well my 1st cylinder is leaking in my 95 pontiac sunfire and it needs a new head. So im gonne get a new engine. I have a 2.2l motor atm, and I was thinking about putting a 2.3, 2.4 or a 3.1 from an older cavalier. Does anyone here have experience with motor swaps or have any idea if any of those motors would mate up with my current tranny. Ill have a friend that always swaps out engines and transmissions helping me. Im just trying to do a little research first.

Different bellhousing on the 2.4 and you'll have to have the ecu and wiring harness for the 2.4... Might wanna think about sticking with the 2.2 (as they are more dependable motors and the parts are far cheaper... plus there are far more upgrades for a 2.2ltr than the 2.4).

I've been around my fair share on Cavs, Sunbirds, and Fires ;)

If you got the tools and will, just get a reman head and slap on there.

Oil fouled plug in first cylinder, that means seals or rings are bad rings no?

you can buy rings for just one piston if thats the case.
Take the head off. Drop the oil pan and remove just the one piston right in the car.
If you buy a reman engine plan on $1600+ for the engine, $1000+ to have it installed.
If you are capable, grab an engine from a respectable yard. Ive done this 2 times and a third engine from E bay believe it or not. No problems on any of the 3.

I'm definately with Ryan on this one... Plenty of 2.2s around in really good shape... Heck might even wanna check out the local papers and such for someone getting rid of a beater (runs good looks like crap).

Stick with the 2.2.
The 2.3's and 2.4's are just absolute pieces of junk imo, as are all the 60 degree motors...:unwell028

x3 what Ryan said. My engine took a dump, and i got a used one with 65k on it, and i havnt had any problems (besides a bad hose, no big).

New belts, hoses, plugs and wires... still gonna save ya a ton over a unmatched swap :thumbsup

ok, ill possibly do that then. I can get a 2.2 60000 miles for 500 bucks.

you sure the head is warped and not just a blown had gasket?
yeah I vote remanned head if you need one.
otherwise go 3800 II or LS1 + T-56
if you're going to swap motors, may as well make it worth the effort.

will a 3800 bolt up to my tranny? If its just motor mounts a new computer and maybe a harness id do that, probably just gonna put a junk yard 2.2 in it. Im looking to buy a grand prix gtp. for like 14000
