Hey guys, I've been looking into some 12" subs. The local audio dealer has some DD (Digital Designs). I listened to them and they sound pretty nice. Any one have any input or expierence with theses subs?
Any recommendations on hard hitting, smooth, subs in the price cat. of 500 a piece or lower, or any thing of that sort is greatlly appreciated.

Not so sure about the DD sub, but i hear they are ok. If you are looking for a sub that is under $500 bucks, look into the Adire Audio Brahma or the Resonant Engineering XXX. I believe both have reviews on this site and are exceptional subs. I think everyone else on this site will agree with me.

DD subs are great. Do you know what model it was? That would help in determining if it's worth it or not.

DD makes some pretty good spl subs..from what i've heard they're not the greatest sq company as far as subs go.

I havent herd any DD subs, but a few friends that go to local SPL competitons say that they get very loud. In my opinion i would go with anything RE. There products are good quality, get very loud, and still manage to maintain a good value of S/Q. WEll thats my $0.02 worth

Digital Designs makes some of the best subs and speakers you can buy, the main thing to decide upon is what kind of SPL you're wanting. They're optimized for ported boxes tuned in the 45 hz region. I'm not saying you can't tune lower than that, but the subs have a fairly high Fs (resonant frequency), most are around mid 30s, and a rather limited linear excursion. In a ported box, huge linear excursion isn't a big issue because of the fact that ported boxes offer more mechanical control (allow less excursion)than sealed enclosures do. DD's subs tend to do best when geared more toward SPL applications where your focus isn't as much on all around bandwidth and SPL as it is for pure hard hitting SPL in a narrower range. If you're wanting typical SQL enclosures such as sealed and lower tuned ported, stick with the Brahmas, X.X.X., Image Dynamics ID max, and others in that range. If you are leaning toward more SPL, the DD is a great one to choose from. Think of it this way:
Brahmas, ID Maxes, X.X.X.'s are good sounding subs that get loud.
Digital Designs subs are loud subs that sound good.
It's a matter of priority.

That is, above the tuning frequency, but the excursion curve is predictable below it. Do your homework when box building!

If they are only good for getting loud, and if they lose the little sq that they have at higher volumes than this is not the sub for me. I like the way the jl w7's sound as far as they are loud, and they are smooth. I'm looking more toward sq, but i want that loud hard thumpin too ya know?
I heard that jl w7's run @<hidden> 1 ohm stability... Is this true, and if so can you still run them at 2/4 ohms. The only reason i didn't just go ahead and buy them was because i read some where that you need a 1 ohm stable amp for these subs, which i don't have.
Any input on eclipse subwoofers? 12" titanium series. These subs are also something i was looking at.
sorry for all the questions, i'd just rather some one with expiernce tell me how/what subs to get rather than find out on my own after wasting a grand or two.
Thanks in advance

The 10W7 and 12W7 come with a 3ohm coil. The 13W7 has dual 1.5's.

Yep, didn't mention that. DD makes their subs with a large mechanical excursion for that purpose, so that you can get some lows out of the sub below tuning. It just has a little higher distortion and less control.

Another great sub, and works very well in a ported box. Right up there with Brahmas, X.X.X.s, ID Maxes, W7s, etc. Really all those subs are pretty close to each other in SPL, of course a couple have more displacement than one or two of the others, but they're all so close to each other that IMO you should simply choose based on how they sound.
