View Full Version : Need advice on new sub idea

I was planning on purchasing two Soundstream T4-12 Tarantula 12" subs and powering them off of two Audiobahn A800T 800 watt mono amplifiers. I already own one of the audiobahn amps and i was planning on just ordering another one. The only thing i'm not certain of is if it would be ok to use the audiobahn amps because each amp puts out 800w rms and each sub puts out 900w rms. Would this be underpowering the subs too much? Good idea or bad? Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

Thats should work alright.
Just for clarification the sub doest put out any watts. It may hold 900 watts.
Also its best to talk in terms of WRMS Watt RMS vs just "watts". People may take what you say as RMS or maximum... 800 WRMS is VERY VERY different than 90 Watts Max.... :p

lol yea i probably should edit that thread but oh well. Thanks for commenting and from now on i'll only speak in WRMS. I also want to know if you've had any experience with the Tarantulas or heard about them? Thanks again for posting

I have one more question. The specs on my amp say 800x1 @<hidden> ohm. The tarantulas are dual 1 ohm voice coil. Does that mean i can't wire my amps to the subs or get as many wrms from it?

No, you would wire your sub voice coils in series to get a 2 ohm impedance.
On the wattage issue. When are you ever going to listen to 800 RMS watts? That should be more than sufficient to drive 2 sub's.
Whether a sub can handle a peak of 900 watts (under what conditions, in the lab? what about the real world?) is irrelevant. The more important considearion, rather than watts (which can be manipulated to be anything the manufacturer wants to advertise), if you're driving low-impedance loads is to get a HIGH-CURRENT amp that can put out the juice to handle 1 or 2 ohms.
Think of of a small garden hose. It's doing fine with low reistance water loads. Now think of a much larger hose, greater in diameter and has to pump water out to fill its new cross-sectional area. That's analagous to amp being forced to drive low-impedance loads. The hose is the amp, the water is the current.
