Way back when I had a Mitsubishi receiver with built in amp, I think 200 WRMS total. It kicked ass!
Im looking into a new setup. What I bought after I sold the mitsubishi bit the dust, so its time for something better.
What I want to end up with:
I want two towers, they will be transmission lines. Probably 8" drivers or 6.5". I want two mids and two tweets per tower.
Now Im not sure if I will wind up with an amp, receiver and dvd, cd, mp3 player or what. Just curious as to what good options exist and are cheap enough.

Two tweets per tower? Why not multi woofers, mid, and one tweet?
Just don't get any of those all in one things. I have never found one I liked and was reliable.

After I sold my Mitsubishi I went and bought a Sony system from Sears. It was on clearance and I got it for $400...
It didnt sound as good nor was it near as loud... But it had a 3 disc CD changer built in :sad017:
That unit I put a bid on is just a receiver/controller with a built in 300 WRMS amplifier.
My current living room is probably to small for a surround sound setup, dunno.

look at Onkyo, Yamaha, and Denon.

Hey Glass,
I would assume to just buy within my budget and I should be good? Any Onkyo, Denon or Yamaha's I should stay away from?
Im looking to buy used to get the most for my cash.
I just mainly need 2 channels (L/R) and a sub as my living rooms isnt large enough for surround sound, IMO. Im not exactly positive, but its about 16'x18'
My budget is around 2-300ish$

If you only need 2 channel, look into NAD, Parasound, Marantz ... I used to know a few more but stuff like Rotel would probably be out of your range. Pioneer Elite has a 2 channel model too.

Check out audiogon.com for well priced Rotel, Adcom and similar amps.

Harmon Kardon's are pretty nice. Super low distortion ratio. A bit less powerful, but a good amp can make up for that.

that room is fine for surround, or specifically 5.1
I wouldn't bother with 7.1 etc.. but a good 5.1 AC3 receiver would do great in there.
use a pair of small bookshelf speakers for the rears, a decent center channel on top of the TV, and your mains and sub. pretty much how I have my bedroom set up, which is like 16x16'
anything from those companies will be a good receiver. your other option is to look at a HTiaB solution from any of those three, too.
get everything in one package but the television, then just plug in your sources and the TV.
A friend of mine went that route with an Onkyo home theater in a box for his dorm room, and loves it.

I'm still using my old Sharp bookshelf system with suround and center... when it came out it was the best rated book shelf sound system out... kinda funny cause I'd like to eventually get something better, but every time one of my buddies gets a really nice expensive system they all compare it to my old cheaper one, so it really makes me think :p lol
