got my new clear taillights in. $30 shipped.. i am tired of my euro's.. everyone has euro's anymore. and it seems even new vehicles have them, lol... anyway i have a question.. i got pulled over earlier(verbal warning to change them), and the cop said that they lense needs to be amber or whatever.. my lights in there now are the same as they were with my euro's, and the only reason it lit up red when i pressed the brake was because of the red tint.. so if i put a red bulb in there, wouldnt that be the same thing basically? the ebay seller said they were legal because of the red strip in them also.. but i guess not in Illinois(nothing remotely cool is legal here, blah).. anyway here are some pics.. i like em alot more than stocks and euros for sure..

I believe they need to have a red reflector and also a red lens to be legal. I think the reason a red bulb doesn't cut it, is because it doesn't light up the housing 'red' enough.

Basically if it doesn't have the DOT approval stamp on them, it's not legal.

A red bulb would probably help you a bit as it would at least throw a red reflection in the housing... and is the red strip a reflector or just red (can't tell from the pics), if it's NOT a reflector then they are definately 50 state Illegal, as all states require not only the lights be red, but also have a red reflector... and as Chris said, they may not be legal without a DOT approval.

the lights arent DOT approved. but i was told numerous times that if i put a red bulb in there i will be ok.. and yes the strip is reflective..

Then I'd go with the red bulb :)
