Derale Fuel Cooler and Heat Shielding
Parts used in this build
No parts listed for this build.
I've been battling fuel temperature issues since I got the vehicle. After long drives it would get to the point where I could smell very strong fumes while driving, pressure would build within the fuel tank, and eventually the fuel pump would start having issues.
Eventually, I performed a test to determine actual temperatures, and confirmed that the fuel tank would reach over 140 degrees, and the fuel lines under the hood would reach over 170 degrees.
Derale Atomic Plate Cooler
In addition to looking into charcoal canister related issues, I opted to just go ahead and install a nice Derale Atomic Plate Cooler. It's plumbed into the return line, cooling excess fuel that gets sent back into the fuel tank.
Finding a location for the cooler was a bit difficult, as it's 13" x 9" x 5" in size. However, there turned out to be a perfect location on the passenger side, up in front of the wheel well.
Fuel Line Heat Shielding
Starting from where the hard lines enter/exit the fuel rail, extending around the block and corner of the exhaust header, and then all the way to the fuel cooler (and back), I wrapped the fuel lines with DEI Heat Shroud Sleeving. I used both 2.5" and 1.5" sleeving to accomplish covering it all really well.
Summary
After an initial test drive, it was apparent that the fuel heating issue is much better!
