I don't really know how to explain it any simpler. the bolt on the back of the alternator can only support so much current, if you exceed that amount of current for long periods of time they will get hot and melt the internal components in the alternator. I'm most cases you will be fine because your not going to be pulling that much current for a long length of time. I just choose to air on the side of caution. On the same token 4ga wire will support lots of current for short periods of time and has more surface area to decrease any heat build up the bolt doesn't.
If you need a further explanation call ohio gen and speak with them about it. They have been building alts far longer than most of these other company's like excessive or irragi or whoever.
