for what it's worth, the Energy e:XL-S12 subwoofer for home theater has a 12" sub forward firing, and a 3" port rear-firing in the cube enclosure.

I pretty much figured out how to have a port fire backwards. If you do a transmission-line and have the port originate as if it were firing forward, but then lead to the rear.
