Bought my car knowing there were issues with it but for the price and the shape it was in I figured it was worth it. I have gone thru the whole car doing a lot of mechanical work and especially electrical repair. Finally finished it off and invested in a new audio system as the factory one died. The factory radio lost the front speakers channel and I guess I was just looking for an excuse to upgrade :)
I bought the following in stages because of the cost:
Head Unit: Kenwood DDX491HD
Interior Speakers:Fronts: Kickers 40CSS694 Rear: 40CS6934
Amplifiers: NVX JAD900.5
Subwoofers:Audiobahn TQ10DF 10" (in the trunk)
My first adjustment was to set the gains. My head unit volume goes up to 35 and I based my settings on 80 percent which is 28. According to the article I read here these should be my approx. gain settings on the amp:
Front speakers: 100 watts x 4 ohms = 400. Take the square of that - 20
Rear Speakers: 150 watts x 4 ohms = 600. Take the square of that - 24.50
Subwoofer: 500 watts x 4 ohms = 2000. Take the square of that - 44
Perhaps I bought the wrong AMP for the job? If I adjust my gains all the way up I still come below the figured numbers. Perhaps I do not have the head unit up loud enough at 28? The amp surely does a good job at producing enough volume for me. No problem there. According to the info on the AMP it will deliver 70 watts/channel @ 4 ohm and 210@4ohm for sub.
The real problem is getting the Head unit / amp settings to where they produce enough bass. I just wanted to start with setting the gains at the amp before I did anything more.
Right now, I have the Head Unit set to passthrough on all channels and trying to adjust the LPF on the amp for the sub. The other 4 speakers I have set on passthrough also on the amp.
My main issue right now is the gain settings and also, I do not seem to get that much bass out of the system. I know its not wiring as I have double checked polarity and connections. They are fine. Using RCA's from the headunit (FS,RS,SUB1,SUB2) to the amp. Also, My other issues are the adjustments on the amp are not very well labled. Its kinda a guessing game as to where they are set. There are no knobs on it and the settings are not graduated.
I will be working on this today. Any thoughts on this?
