Bill is right.

But for the 99.9% of us out there without an O-Scope its the DMM route.

I'm with Bill, I rather just set the gain by ear.

EDIT: The DMM gets things pretty close, but I still end up doing some tweaking when it's all said and done.

The problem with dmm's is your using hard data for something that's dynamic.

Name one of these that's stays the same when you play music.

RMS
Freq
Load (ohm)
Input voltage
output voltage

The list goes on and on.

The only thing i set with a dmm is my gain matching. Once i get both amps to match then its by ear.

even on my competition setups we use the DMM's to monitor the output voltage and output current. With the termlab hooked up your score will stop climbing and you will stop making power (V,A)

i only ask because sometimes i feel like my sub hits harder at times when it really just shouldnt. because i have a subwoofer for my room that hits harder at different times than in my car.

is that normal or would that have to do with tuning?

alright the guy at best buy told me that for 2 twelve inch alpine s subs, i should set the gains at 55-75 hz. he did not mention anything about the lpf or rpf section, and also another thing is that to set the gains, theres a screw you twist on my amp, and one maximum is 50 and the other is 500, and there are no numbers in between the scale. does that seem right? it seems kind of weird to set it at 55 to 75 when thats basically the lowest end of the scale..

Thats not setting the gain, that is setting the filter.

You want to set it to LPF and slightly above the 50 mark. You just gotta guess where 80 Hz is.
