Hijack away Al, we're both working on pretty much the same project. :

Scott, how does that stuff hold up to vibration? My IROC has a pretty stiff suspension, and sees a lot of hard street driving, will that stuff pull away from the body?

Make sure you get the stuff for Windows and Doors if you use the expanding foam spray (or something along those lines). The regular stuff will bow window and door frames and will deform if not pop off the sail in some cases. Not saying don't use it but make sure you use the right stuff.

For shallow mounts you might want to look into exile shallow mount subs. They have a 10" that is 4 ohm 300wrms and they sound pretty good. I have heard them in a set-up once and for shallows I was suprised on the output. I can't say much about long term on them but maybe some people on here have some experience with the company.

If so, that would make it a lot easier than trying to fab up some sort of really small box.

Rockford Fosgate also has a shallow mount. Stage 3 I believe. That is if you are going with shallow mount subs, it is just another option.

I have to say I agree with smoker on the Kicker 8". The shallow mount Pioneers are power hungry. And the Kicker is a bit more sensitive.

I bounced an idea off the installer who did my 92. I have fiberglass baffles (fabric type) in my sail panels already for the 6 X 9 speakers. He thought he might soak them with resin and make them rigid and seal them up and work from what he gets. They might be a bit small, but I think I'll try to go with it. It appears that the opening of the "enclosure" and the sail panel will have to be slightly modified to accept an 8" shallow mount woofer, but we'll work that out when install time comes.

That would be a question for Aaron since he brought this one up. I was actually thinking of the new Memphis 10" shallow mount subs until I opened up the sail panel and looked at what I had. Seems the space is a bit small for the 10" (it is doable) without more work than I want to do. An 8" sub will still require a little fabrication and the air space from the glassed up baffle might be just about right for the Pioneers. Seems the right ones for the application, but I'm still shopping....

These are the soft fiberglass "baffles" I have in my sail panels. I want to try to use these to form a solid enclosure. I'm experimenting now by soaking them with resin to harden them up so they can be sealed. The biggest problem I have at the moment is the width of the opening, it's just a tad over 6" and those pioneers require a tad over 7".



Even if I use something other than the Pioneers, the approach is the same. I'm thinking to use an MDF panel over the opening. Then I'll widen the enclosure and the corresponding hole in the sail panel to accommodate the larger speaker, then mount the MDF to the sail panel.

So that's what they're supposed to look like. Mine had the backs chopped out by some lazy install tech long before I bought the car.

As for my own install, I'm seriously thinking about the Kickers that smoker recommended. Kicker claims a 4 5/16" mounting depth for the CompVR 8's. Right now I have MA Audio 6x9's in the back. They're 4 inches deep and when mounted in the stock position they come within about 1/4 inch of the metal. If I mounted onto a sheet of MDF it should make up for the extra half inch I'll need.

Plus I can get them new off of eBay for $30 apiece. :happy055:
