Because score is done by how much gold you make..

I was able to get up to about 2100 or so.
I had 4 of the combo towers, and the darn things still wouldn't die

just got 4600. saving your money really is key. i had about 1500g right before i screwed up

yeah, when I got that last score I had almost 6000 gold before starting second bonus round.
