tranny probs..

well for the past couple days when driving, id stop at a light and go, and it would jerk sometimes and wouldnt speed up at all.. so im like "ok the transmission is probably slipping" the car has over 200,000 miles on it, so i guess its expected... do you changing the transmission fluid would help? also its a 94 Celica hatchback.

also. it doesnt do it everyday, just a couple or so times once in awhile.

You could try it, you may have some trash in there. Change the fluid and filter and see if it helps. Even if it doesn't help, you can look at the transmission pan and look up in there to see if the clutches are eaten at, any trash in the filter/pan, any mechanical wear, etc. The Toyota transmissions I dealt with required a friction modifier additive that you add to the fluid to prevent eating at the transmission clutches. Most of them I've seen or heard of are simply worn out and weak with a lot of debris in the pan, my guess would be that your transmission is about to go to be honest with you. Toyotas typically have weak transmissions anyway.

I've seen changing the fluid and filter make it worse, but really what are you going to do? I would change the fluid and filter and use some sort of additive... Saddly I do see a new tranny in your future...

Scarrell, I don't know much about that car, but I did have a similiar problem a few years back. I would pull up at a light and start to go and the car would start shaking for a sec, not go anywere and die. It started right back up everytime and I could simply drive off. It ended up being a sensor on the transmission that told the torque converter when to lock out. I would look in a chiltons manual and see if your car has the same type of sensor. If I remember corectly it was less than $20 for the sensor, and only took me 30 min or so to change it out.

I believe that Jeremy is speaking of the lockout switch for the torque converter. When the switch goes bad it causes the torque converter stay locked and won't let the car idiol while in any gear (except park and netural), I don't suspect that to be your problem. It's probably the bands/clutches inside your tranny, which means its time for a rebuild...

Yep thats the switch, but the car idioled fine. It wasn't till I got on the gas and the clutches engaged that I had a problem.

hey....problem solved..... it was the spark plugs.... put new ones in and we are golden!
