No spotify control through bluetooth

I just installed a kenwood dmx905s everything works great it just won't control spotify without going through android auto. I have a sprint lg g5 running android 7.0 I can play spotify through bluetooth but when I hit the spotify app it says disconnected. I am out of ideas any help appreciated thanks. I just tried my wifes galaxy s8 does not work either
