My Comp VR Is Gunna Blow

Post by NorthQuad »

I had a stereo installed by a Kicker dealer and I told him I wanted something that would crank on my chest. I wanted a sqaure sub but he tells me, no no dude we will stick a 12" Comp VR in there with KX 600.1 and it will pound. I asked him, won't that be too much power for the sub and he said, no it will just be easier for the amp to push the sub. He had been doing this stuff for years so I belived him. Well I get my truck back and I didn't even turn it up enough to really feel any Bass and POP the sub blows. So I call them up and tell them and they say you just have to wait a while and it will go away. Ok, I've owned a few subs in my day and they have never sounded this horrible so I bring it to him. Yup it's hooped so they give me another one. I give this one forever to break in and anytime I want to turn it up it wants to blow. Everything is turned down on my deck and on my amp and the sub still can't handle the power so it's either no Bass or blow the thing. The sub can only handle 400 RMS. I am getting nothing but the run around from these guys. So I have e-mailed Kicker about it. My question is would you guys use a 600 Rms amp with a sub that could only handle 400 Rms? I'm sick of not having Bass and spending a total of $2300 not to have it.

ok well call that guy a moron..... first blow that sub, get a new one (if its free ofcourse) and tell them to F Off... get Another Comp VR's and you will be good to go...

also.... on the on the L5 ad L7 subs, he was right to steer you away from them... they have major problems with tensel leads breaking and other problems..

Yeah, that guy is a moron and I can't get it through his head that he doesn't know what he is talking about. He said the exact same thing that I might have to buy another Comp but the thing is that the funds aren't there for anymore stereo equiptment for the time being. I went with kicker because I wanted something that would pound for years. This is so frustrating.

could be an enclosure issue. how high are the gains on the amplifier set? what sort of enclosure did you go with? sealed or ported?

hmm... you could sell the amp and sub... and get something different... i mean if you want to get a Solo sub then that is up to you.... alot of people have good luck with them, and some dont... but if you want to keep that then turn the gains down More.. like less than a quarter of the way, and be careful i guess...

It's a sealed Kicker box and I have the gain very low along with the Bass level set very low on the deck too. So low that it's not even fun to listen to anymore and definaitely not worth the money.

Having to sell the system would really blow because there isn't even dust on it yet and I would lose lot's of money. Man this really blows, that guy should be out of business.

If its just an issue of the sub getting too much power from the amp that (as i understand) you bought from the dealer that installed it, then i would simply take the amp out, box it all back up and go to the shop. Slap it up on the counter and demand either A. An exchange and compensation for another amp that isn't quite as powerful, or B. A full refund.

Or you could also keep the amp and demand a refund or exchange for a sub that can handle the power you are [or not] giving it.

Either way something needs to be refunded because you got ripped due to the lack of knowledge this sales rep had.

I agree with you on that dmeyer07 I just needed to know that I wasn't an idiot for thinking that the sub was too low powered for the amp. Even though it was clear just listening to it. I want to keep the amp because I want a loud system but the sub has got to go and on his expense.
