Install: Am I crazy

Post by SSoonr »

I am having a shop do my install... (dont flame me, I have my reasons). I have two options and am trying to talk myself out of the more expensive one. My car is a 2001 Camaro SS.

Equipment:
Alpine 9855
Boston z6
Boston 10" G5
Arc 4150xxk
Arc 1500xxk

Expensive Option:
Have custom kickpanels (or door pods) made at the tune of $1000
Have a custom fiberglass box built also @ $1000

Cheaper Option:
Mount the mids in the door and tweets in the a-piller (price unknown, but gotta be a heck of a lot cheaper than the prior)
Sub in the box below which is $125 (and the box fits the sub specs)

I am driving an hour and a half to go to this shop to finalize my ideas on Thursday and want to be very firm in what I want. I am leaning very strongly towards the cheaper option unless one of you can convince me that I would be justified spending the other $2k.

Thoughts?

It has been so much fun getting to this point, but will be glad it is over and hopefully I wont be completely broke.

I couldn't justify spending 1k on kick panels. It's not worht it IMO. Why not try them on your own?

You could probably save $1800 or more and do it all yourself.. even if you don't have the time right now, is it worth 2 grand?

i guess ity all comes down to this: do you have two grand to flush down the toilet? if you can afford it and still pay your rent and insurnace next month, why not?!

do I 2 grand to flush down the toliet... definately not
Could I pay my bills, yes, but my life wouldnt be much fun... I am just a poor college student

Why am I not doing it myself?
I dont have the time between work and summer school to do this myself. I want it done right. I definately did not work all summer to buy my amps just to blow them up.

I wondering how much of a loss I am going to get by mounting them in the doors and a-pillers and saving mucho $

If you really wanted to do it, i'm sure you could find time. I don't nkow your situation, but fact is nearly everyone can make time to do somethin if they have the drive to do it. Not flaming you at all btw. Just tryin to save ya some money. If ya'd like i could look up some good tutorials for you on how to glass your kick panels .

This is my first attempt at car audio and I want it done right. I want something that I will not have to worry about, and something to build off of. So, I want to go all out this time around, and build from this experience. In my next car, I would like to do most of the work. However, on this car, I think I want something that I can be fully confident in. I am really wanting to get this installed by a good shop; and do something more involved like kickpanels on my next install... plus if I messed it up, I would kick myself forever... thanks for the support though

im sure someone on here could easily make you a pair of kick panels for your Maro.. or on some other site.. thats just too much cash...or you could maybe meet up with someone on the board that can do it., im sure there must be someone that lives about as far away as that shop maybe.. either way id try to find other alternatives...

$2K is absolutely outrageous.

I hate to point you to it, but theres a guy lurking the forums that claims to do fiberglass work thats top notch for cheap. Not sure what his name is... But from what I read you can send him pieces of the car and he will build off that to your sketch.

I have purchased the prefabed sub box and the shop owner is telling me that it won't work and I should send it back... sounds like bs to me

From what some of you are saying, you think it would be better to have someone else make me some kicks for cheaper, rather than mount the mids in the door and tweets in the a-pillar?
