is there a "correct" way to do this,or is it one of those subjective things?

Subjective.

I preffer a fair amount of treble.

depends on your goals, and the type of EQ.
if it's an octave or parametric 30-band, and it's for competition, you'd usually set it using an RTA.
If you're just talking about an in-dash graphic eq or one in your head unit, just go by personal preference.
