ok so long story short, pc accidentally shut down during a system restore and now all that happens is i get to POST, go to choices for boot and no matter what i choose, after i do, it restarts over and over. i never learned how to fix this. also, not to toot my own horn but i think i am above average when it comes to computers.. any answers?

no safe mode? then i would do a hard drive swap try to fix and if that did not work format and reinstall.im no expert or any thing though.

Just try reinstalling XP over itself. That usually will fix it.

Or if you want to be adventurous, boot to the XP disk and go into the repair xp part. Type "fix mbr" (I think that is what you need to type; it's something about fixing the master boot record) in the DOS like interface. That may fix it.

sorry i forgot to mention that i want to try and get back to the way windows was.. would much prefer not to reformat.

My two ways wouldn't involve reformating.

derf i knew that, i just got home from work, my mind is mush lol

after that quit using system restore.
disable it in system properties.
all SR does is give viruses a good place to hide, and slow the entire system down, eating up resources.
useless feature.

Can you turn it off then just turn it on when your adding new progs or making big changes?

Or just make a restore point?

Also where do these files hide? I want to delete my old ones, if safe?

heres the full story, sorry guys i was tired last night:

built computer ~dec 05' and it has worked fine.. for my gf's mom simple celeron 2.66 w/ 256ram 64mb graphics card. she was playing a game about 2-3 weeks ago, walked into the kitchen and when she came back its shut off. brought it back to my house, thought i figured it was the psu and the mobo so i got new ones of both. got it in, replaced it all and it ran fine. brought it back to my gf's house and it did it again! i would shut down out of the blue and i would have to turn the psu off for a bit then turn it back on for it to start. pisses me off! so at that point i thought maybe its the graphics b/c i was using the built in graphics from the mobo. took it home and put in my 128mb asus graphics card to no avail. now all it will do when i push the power button is turn on and then stay on for 1-3 secs and then shut off.. im so lost now! what could it be? now im thinking maybe its the case? faulty jumpers going from the case to the mobo? at this point im so stumped and aggravated and its all on me b/c i am their tech support! thanks in advance..

cpu- celeron D 2.66
mobo- msi PM8M-V
ram- rosewill 256mb
graphics- onboard
psu- newly installed ultra x-connect 500w

This is what I was about to post, glad William brought you to it. I believe that fix mbr has to use a switch thereafter. I think it is :fix mbr /f for full.

So you fix the full Master Boot Record. This should fix your problem. Thanks William for posting this. I did this just a few days ago for a clients computer. It is a very quick fix and you won't lose any data.
