Frozen Waves

Thought some of you guys in the Midwestern areas might appreciate these. A nice reminder of last winter.
My sister sent me some of these, so I did some searching and found more. These were from Lake Huron this last winter up near Mackinaw City, Michigan which is at the tip of the lower peninsula (I know some of you know this already), about 3 hours north of my home town. This happened while the lake's surface was frozen. Below, supercooled water froze, expanded and pushed through the surface, causing these incredible formations.

from what i've read, the wave-like formations are not formed while in liquid state. The ice pushes up from under the surface ice, and melts to form the wave like formations. Although, it is still really neat to see such large ice-cubes :happy055:

These look pretty sweet but unfortunately I don't believe this happened here in MI. For one it was never covered on the local news and something like this would have made it for sure and also snopes lets ya know what causes them and also has the origin of these pics.

Looks like my sister was mis-informed. She's in Tennessee and got this also second hand by e-mail from a friend/client. I haven't been in Michigan in years, but still consider it home and know the winters can get bitterly cold. Thanks for setting the record straight
