Being in Arizona, I have been constantly battling cooling at the extreme end of the spectrum (specifically when 100+ degrees outside, and simultaneously pushing hard up the mountain). This is the only scenario where my heat will creep up until I need to pull over for a min to let her cool down.
I knew the 40-year old radiator wasn't doing me any favors, and my ECM was still turning on my cooling fans above 230 degrees. Therefore, I opted to finally get a new radiator and a custom-tuned MEMCAL chip for the ECM to change the cooling fan turn-on and turn-off points.
Dewitts HP Series Radiator with 1.25" Tubes
I opted to go with one of the best names in the business… Dewitts. I also decided to go with their best version, which is the HP Series that has the larger 1.25" tubes for the best cooling I can get.
It took a couple months for Dewitts to build and ship the new radiator. Upon finally receiving it, there was shipping damage and unfortunately the filler and overflow spout were severely damaged.
I needed a custom mounting solution for my Maradyne cooling fan system added to the radiator, so rather than send it back and wait for repairs, I took it to a local shop. They cut off the damaged filler and welded on a beautiful solid billet one instead. At the same time, I had them weld on a 5/8" tall piece of fairly thick aluminum along the length of the top edge, and bottom edge. That allowed the ability to drill mounting holes as needed for the fan system.
Custom MEMCAL Chip for ECM - from Tuned Performance
Since my 1986 has the cooling fans controlled via the ECM, I ended up needing a whole new MEMCAL chip programmed in order to change the turn-on and turn-off temp settings. The guys at Tuned Performance were amazing at explaining exact options, and they were not only able to change my fan temps to 200/on 185/off, but also provided a much better tune for my 5.0 TPI.
