At the last Cruise Puyallup, I noticed my Camaro's voltage gauge was sitting low—around 12 volts. The alternator had finally given out, so I decided to upgrade instead of sticking with stock. After some research, I chose a Mechman 170 Amp 6 Phase alternator, known for its reliability and solid warranty. Following their recommendation, I also picked up the H106 Indicator light harness to ensure better charging at idle.
Installation Time
The install was pretty straightforward. The Mechman alternator didn’t use the OEM bracket that supports the back of the alternator, so I just removed it (bonus: weight reduction!). The only other real difference from the stock setup was wiring. There’s a single wire that needs to connect to an ignition-controlled source, so I ran it to the fuse box and tapped into the accessory wire. Easy enough.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, I didn’t have to replace the belt. Mechman’s instructions say you might need a new one, but my current belt fit fine.
Finally Finished the Big 3 Upgrade
While I had the car apart, I decided it was finally time to finish the Big 3 wiring upgrade I’d been putting off. The main thing left was upgrading the wire between the alternator and the battery. I used KnuKonceptz 1/0 Kolossus Flex Tinned OFC power wire—it’s high quality and super flexible.
I also decided to add a fuse for this wire. Some people say it’s not necessary, but I feel better having one just in case something comes loose or gets pinched. That wire runs straight to the battery, and I don’t want to risk a short ruining my day.
Fitting Everything In
Space was tight under the hood, especially since I already had a fuse holder for the amp wiring. That’s when I found KnuKonceptz’s new battery terminal with a built-in fuse. Perfect solution! I used it for the alternator wire instead of the amp wire. It’s a bit bulky, and I had to angle it to fit everything, but it works.
Shout-Out to Mechman
Big thanks to Tony at Mechman for helping me choose the right alternator and answering all my questions—both before and during the install. He even got back to me within an hour when I ran into a hiccup. That’s some top-notch customer service.
I’m really happy with how everything turned out. The new alternator is performing great, and now I don’t have to worry about low voltage while sitting in traffic. Plus, I can keep running my audio system without stressing the electrical system. If you’re thinking about upgrading, I’d definitely recommend checking out Mechman.
