Ok dude, just cause I care, I'm going to explain it to you.
Below 500 herts our ears start to use timing to locate where a speaker is located.
At 80 to 100 herts its the only way our ears can locate the position of a speaker.
Have you ever sat in a car and the sub sounded like it was in front of you?
Don't answer that, I all ready know the answer.
Either way, its simple to do. Match the phase of both subs so that your x over points between your subs and mids blend well when the sound waves hit your ear.
That being said....
If sub base, or freqs around 80 to 100 herts were recorded in stereo, it would make it even harder to properly blend your mids and subs.
Not only would you have 4 path lengths to deal with, but you would also have 4 diffrent absolute phases.
(Absolute phase, is the phase at which a sound wave leaves the speaker)
(Relative phase, is the phase of the same sound wave as it arrives at your ear)
Relative phase is a variable. If you change the distance from the speaker to your ear, the freq, or absolute phase, your relative phase will change.
Cancelation is another reason you don't want your subs doing their own thing (ie, playing in stereo)
The slight variations between left and right channels at higher freqs would destroy your low end output if sub bass was recorded in stereo.
Think of it this way. You have two speakers at a diffrent distances from you, playing the largest sound waves you can hear and reflecting off of everything. Any time those two waves cross and your 180 deg out of phase, your going to get cancelation.
