I believe it had to do with utilization of the cached memory... Airforceyooper you are correct... but i do believe that they will be fixing that problem soon... I have been reading a bit about the new Intel release of their Penryn line and supposedly even with the change in nm size of the chip, there is a new process in which they are manufactured which ensures better conductivity and transfer...

I was reading on Tom's hardware about some issue Intel is having with the quad cores. I can't remember what it is. I think it had something to do with their cached memory not being adequate or something along those lines. Even still, the duo cores rated higher then the AMD quad cores. :(

arent the quad core intels not really quad cores but 2 dual cores

by GlassWolf » Wed Jan 02, 2008 4:05 am

actually the quad core intels run hotter than the AMDs, but they are also loads faster than AMD, and overclock like mad, so it's a trade off. the heat is caused by the power used for the additional computing power.

go Intel. forget company loyalties and go with the best product.

also if you do plan to overclock it to get the best performance, go with good RAM. forget the economy crap and buy the high end stuff with good timing specs. always worth the difference in price. especially if this is going to take months to put together, since by the time you buy everything, it's all going to be obsolete anyway.

I'm still using the 2.8 gig AMD machine I build going on 8 years ago. lol. It's slow as I don't know what ... but it's reliable. I've got Muskin 222 special ram in it and a 9700 pro video card iirc which had just come out back then. It will play CIV IV, but very slowly and the video messes up sometimes. Building a new system is on my to do list, right behind my car stere, new laptops for me and my wife, and a small list of other slightly more important things. Hopefully by the time I decide to build a new maching, AMD will be back on their game.

I have been hardcore amd as well for the past few years. My current system was top'o'the'line when I built it almost two years ago, and it still kicks ass. Its a 3800+ 64, asus board, dual corsair, nvidia 6600. Does just fine for what I need I suppose. I would LOVE to get some of that new stuff, but my money is in the stereo business right now.

As far as intel, yeah they are faster now, but I still like AMD better. Just because I can.

i still use amd
my main music machine is a dual athlon mp 2800+ setup
could do games on that one if i wanted but i prefer not to let that one touch the internet or have many services running on it or do anything other than music with it.
i have a few intel machines my media server is intel then i have an internet machine in the new addition that is intel based
the machines i use the most like my laptop and desktop are all amd

Thanks for the help guys . I guess I still have some planning to do, since I don't plan to build it right away I have no problem taking my time. I guess I will have to do some reading as I had Intel before but always liked AMD more.

^^^ same here... Barton Core!!! My Friend that was the shiznit! Its starting to die here....

anyway... yea i really like the 64's and properly cooled b4 the duo came out... that sucker would wipe the floor with those intels...

hate to say this but intel is the way to go until amd fixes their l3 cache issues also ive never seen and intel that was hotter than an amd unless it was way overclocked. i usually use stock cooling in intel and always use liquid cooling with amd.
the older amds generally whooped intel. i still have an old 3200+ system that i use for games
