Sound deadening

Post by Robert Wollenberg »

ok, I've contacted a few commercial businesses about wholesaling me sound deadening materials. I've got samples on the way along with pricing. From what I've seen so far, the products are equal to or superior to what's being sold through "car stereo" channels. Once I can do a comparison of technical data and prices, if anybody on this site would like any deadening, let me know and I'll get you a great deal. And this is for constrained layer dampner (dynamat), closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl. I don't mean to be stepping on anybody's shoes, I'm not sure how close anybody is to the guy from sounddeadeningshowdown, and I'm not trying to step on his toes, so if anybody feels I am, just say so and we can delete this post and pretend it never happened.

If you are talking about CLD tiles, I think you should just try and sell sound deadener showdown out of your shop. Don has done a ton of research on the topic, and I can assure you the stuff you would be getting isn't nearly as good.

If you are talking about mass loaded vinyl, get that from a commercial place if you plan on selling it. Its all the same if it weighs the same.

Foam is typically the same too, the more closed the cells are and the more waterproof it is the better.

I've been researching various deadeners myself. His CLD tiles have the same acoustical deadening properties as the stuff you can get from b-quiet at more than twice the price if I remember right. And the stuff I'm looking at getting could surpass that if not beat it, and for cheaper yet. I'm not trying to take away his business, just let everyone know there are alternatives. Doesn't matter to me where people get it from. Locally, I'll be pimping the stuff I can get at half the cost of B-quiet at the price of sound deadener showdown's stuff. :) As for online, I'm not really in the online business. But if someone did want something, I'm always willing to help out where I can. I'd be willing to ship someone stuff if it was worth my while.

I hope this doesn't come across as a bash or whatever on sound deadener showdown. I'm certainly not trying to do that. I've chatted with him online and he seems like a real nice guy.

Sorry bro but your gonna be hard pressed to find anything better than what Don sells. B-quiet isn't even close. There is a reason Don's stuff is more expensive. Unless you intend to create your own Constrained layer damper you wont get better. Falken has tested it and i have as well. It surpasses everything i've tested with flying colors. Im curious to know what you think makes this new special product better than the rest?

Mind sharing some info with us on it? Do you know what the thickness of the constraining layer is and what material?

As far as I know it's not a new special product. Not any newer or special than Don's. Near as I can tell, they're all pretty much the same as long as you're comparing apples to apples. the difference is in the price. I'm still collecting the tech data on the prodcuts I've found so I can compare them to each other and compare their prices.

Does don actually make his own stuff? Or is he ordering materials from a company the same as the one's I've found, cutting up the stuff and reselling it at a heavily marked up price to make people believe what they're buying is that much superior when in reality it's the same thing?

I don't think what I found is any differernt or special than what don has. In fact, I suspect it's the same stuff. The only point I'm trying to make is, it's way cheaper. That's all.

I'm curious how you guys tested these products against each other and what your results were? Do you guys have that data available? What were your test methods? Perhaps I can do a similar comparison and see if the results come out to be the same.

Well lets hear the spec's then...

Not all sound deadener is created equal and before i tell you why i would rather you learn it on your own. While most share the same design and use the same products some are vastly better than others. Before we get into that though lets find out what you know.

How does sound deadener work? Specifically a Constrained layer dampening material.

Lets start here and go on from there.

As far as mark up its the only way to make money. If you intend to sell a product for not much more than you sell it for id start preparing for failure. If people are willing to pay the price for the product y would you sell it for less especially if its already better and cost less than what most already pay? That's a free market economy. I'm not about to knock down the price of my custom woofers until A either someone makes something better for the same or less money or B the demand goes down.

You are entitled to do whatever you want to do.

I wouldnt compare your to his or make him the standard as to which to base everything from.

Go about your business doing what you do for yourself man. If you come across something you want to share with us then please do.

I dont see no harm it what you want to do. Who knows, maybe you will find something great. Maybe it will just be a waste of money? Point is you wont know if you dont try!

I agree, but I'm trying to help educate him about the specifics of how the product's work. As we all know there is a ton of misinformation in this hobby and i don't want to see him fall into the trap many others have as he's my home boy. In the end he can do whatever he wants regardless of anyone's opinion. If you guys wish we can base this on another product doesn't matter to me. I'm just using SDS as a standard because right now there is nothing better.

I'm well aware of how deadening works Bill, thanks. lol. You don't have to be so defensive. The constrained layer stops reattles and lowers the resonant frequency of whatever it's stuck to. MLF is the sound barrier and the closed cell foam decouples the MLF from the pannel it would otherwise be touching ... yeah yeah yeah. I'm not an idiot, but thank you for thinking so.

I didn't intened to get into a pissing contest with you Bill. In fact, in my first post I said something to the effect of, if this was going to be an issue, delete the post. So lets just delete the post. So there are only certain brands/companies/etc. allowed to be discussed on this board. So be it. It doesn't matter to me either way. I just wish Billiards blast would stop freezing up everytime I beat the high score.

That's not me being defenses. I never said you were an idiot and i don't think you were. The fact you think i could possibly think that i would think of you like that is a little unsettling. This isn't a pissing contest either i have no interest in it. Many people don't understand how CLD's actually work and i wanted to make sure you do before you go spend lots of money on something that wont return the profit. I have no idea if your one of the people who understands it or not. My goal was to help educate you on the differences between the many diffrent types and y some work better than others.

No one said you can only discuss certain brands companies or anything else. SDS has nothing to do with me or anyone else other than the fact there product right now is the best on the market again I'm pretty disturbed that you would think i was that one sided about something especially as your friend. Lets compare second skin or B-quiet Edead or even MajicMate400 i have no stock in any of them and i would be just as glad to talk about how one or the other is better or worse than your "product"

Y is everyone so apprehensive to learning? Anytime anyone tries to educate someone they automatically think there calling you and idiot? No one knows everything and everyone can benefit from shared knowledge and this is exactly why I'm done with this hobby. Apparently attempting to help people learn makes you an asshole. My apologized for not "knowing" how much you know about deadener's and questioning your knowledge.

For what its worth the backing on the deadener is what makes the difference.

for comparison Edead uses an aluminum Foil SDS/Second Skin uses an aluminum sheet of 10mil thickness. That will make a huge difference in its effectiveness and has nothing to do with the rubber backing. This is what i wanted to make sure you understand.

From here on out i wont bother to help anyone. Ive realized now that everyone in car audio already knows everything.
