Horns?

Does anybody still use them? I installed a couple sets years back ... like 15 years back.

I see ID still makes them, but is anybody using them? Do they just have a ton of left over stock and they're just not willing to drop the price to get rid of it?

I believe ID is the only company making them now. At least real ones.

it's funny I was thinking about these just the other day.
I remember back in the early to mid 90's, it seemed like every install you saw in magazines used them.

I was wondering if anyone still tried to use them.

I've considered using them again just for the novelty of it. Maybe not in my own car, but I'll find a guinea pig.

By god they are the most ear piercing things ever created. I cannot stand them lol. I have 16ohm selenium's on 100 watts each and at full power they are unbearable. I have them play from 22khz to i think 800 or so.

EQ EQ EQ ;-)

The main advantage to horns is there wide freq range, and in some cases their dispersion pattern.

They can sound pretty kick ass, and image very well.

BUT.... They need a lot of tweaking, very well thought out install, and a 1/3 octave eq to calm them down.

This is DJ not in car. Using the eq helps mellow them out some but its a fine line between crazy loud and good sound. A car is easy you set it up to what (Relatively of course) you like. Dj'ing not so much what you think sounds good could sound completely different to 200 kids who want to hear Rhianna as loud as they can stand it.

lol. I like the throaty sound that comes from a horn or good midrange. I absolutely love how B&O BeoLab 5s sound. And I've had professional musicians bash those speakers all to hell as some of the worst ever made. lol. To each his own I suppose. This is why I try to take the extra time to get an understanding of how an individual likes to hear their music before I build them a system. Type of music, etc. Paper cone speakers, aluminum cone speakers, makes a difference. One tweeter, 12 tweeters ... I've actually talked to people who said all they want is subs and tweets. I don't know how anybody could stand that ...

Horns.

Be aware to use horns properly, you're going to need something like an audiocontrol EQT on each one, or you'll need a head unit like mine (one with 1/3 octave EQs built in) to shape the horns. You'll also want access to an RTA and tone generator or CD with test tones and pink/white noise tracks.

You don't just slap a set of HLCDs into a car and go like a pair of components.
