Stagging issues ... Need help

Hi ,

just joined the forum after reading out some of the threads and found it to be very helping. However I have a query for experts to answer that is related to Front Stage width and depth..

First of all I would like to lay down my setup details so that expert may know what I am playing around with. Please find below the details;

Head Unit - Alpine DVA 9965
Processor - Alpine PXA 701
Connectivity - Optical
Speakers - Morel Elate 6 - 3Way
Amplification - Adcome 4702 and 4304
Power - Stinger Zero AWG 6000
RCs - Oehlbach

Problem - I had been following the matrix that PXA 701 says for time alignment however that restricts my stage width. this wouldn't be wrong If I would say that stage from listening position is limited to the A pillar whereas the passenger side is wide till the side view mirror (Stage width) whereas stage center is dead right in the center of the dash... I have my other ride in which I am playing two way full active mode and stage is wide enough till the side view mirrors at both ends.. what could possibly be the reason in my primary car for such a limited stage width... !!!!

There are lots of reasons that the stage could be narrow on the drivers side. Reflections, speaker angle, distance.... Tell us more about the car and how you have the speakers installed.

well, as inquired, let me share that I have my A Pillars with mid range and tweaters fiber glassed and angled to the middle of passanger and driver seat I-e center of the cockpit...

Please also find some of the pics from my previous install, just to give an idea of angle, fiber glassing and distance..

hope this will give a better idea as direction of both left and right side is angled at the center of cockpit I-e center of driving and pessanger seat. Waiting for your expert suggestions and opinion..

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I started a new job, and bought a house. So I haven't had much free time to help out around here.

So let's start with your question. Why does the drivers side sound so narrow?

It sounds narrow, because it is narrow. Look at the location of the speaker, and now imagine where the boundary on that side of the stage is. I would bet the boundry rests right around the voice coil of the speaker.

There really isn't a magical way to make a stereo seem wider, or deeper. If you want to move the stage back mount the speakers farther away from your ears. If you want the stage to feel wider, mount them farther apart.

So that leads us to the real question. Why does the passanger side seem wider?

Reflections.

I would have to refer to Jonathan's post to nail down the exact method and timing that makes it work. But to keep it short and sweet I will explain it like this. What you are hearing in the drivers seat is a reflected sound wave. The wave leaves the speaker, reflects off of a surface and then travels to your ear. The distance your brain perceives the speaker to be at is equal to the distance from the speaker to the reflection point + the distance from the reflection point to your ear.

What I said earlier, that there is no magical way to make a stage wider, or deeper is still true. However, we can use reflections in a strategic manor that increase the PERCEIVED length between the driver and our ears giving us more depth, or width (as you have noticed)

well yeah definitely reflections can be used in most appropriate manner to increase the space between the drivers and your hearing ears (the difference you'll actually notice in real as well).
