Silly question...

Post by ridr4lif »

Ok, i go home in 2 days and had something in mind. If i were to run my amp (300x2 at 4 ohms) to my sub (L7, 600rms, dual 4 ohm) in that configuration, it shouldnt hurt the sub right?

I was thinking that if the amp is playing in stereo (one channel per v.c.) that maybe each v.c. might get a different signal due to some songs where it fades right to left. Should i do it this way?

Is this clear enough to understand and answer...its kinda late...

thanx in advance

what hu are you running? i know alpines have an option in the setup menu to chose between stereo and mono for sub output.

you can take a pair of y's to combine the left and right channels and then split it out to two channels again. we used to do this back in the day to get a mono (sort of) signal. its not really mono but it does combine the left and right.

just run it in stereo, or bridge the amp.
bass is pretty much all mono from the source anyway.
stereo separation ends around 200Hz. No reason to separate channels below the vocals range.

no need for a splitter etc.. and if you have an alpine deck, chances are it has a setting to switch the sub output from stereo to mono internally anyway which does the same thing if you're really concerned.
personally I'd just bridge the amp and wire the coils in series.
same end result, but you're guranteed a mono signal.

Well the main reason i want to run the amp in stereo is because i will get more power. Currently i am running the sub at 8 ohms (v.c.'s in series) but am only getting 420 watts to my 600rms sub. I would like to run the full 600 to the sub.

Oh, and im running a Pioneer deck, so i dont think i have the option to switch from mono to stereo.

I wanna try it, but wanted to make sure that i wasnt gonna hurt my sub doing so.

Thanx for all the responses!

dual 4 ohm coils

you get the same power to 8 ohms bridged as you do with 4 ohms stereo
you won't get any more power

so essentially your saying that with 300 per channel stereo and lets use 1200 bridged just for sake of argument that the 8 ohm load on a bridged amp will be the same power as the stereo load on 4 ohm coils.. i concur....do you concur?

Ok...Dual 4 ohm v.c.'s.

Amp is 300x2 at 4 ohms, or 840x1 at 4 ohms. So i assumed that at 8 ohms, mono, it was 420 watts. Is my assumption correct?

If so, then running the amp in stereo mode (300x2), i would be feeding my sub more power.

I kno, the amp is a shitty audiobahn, but money is tight and i wanna get as much output as possible.

Are my assumptions correct, or should i just keep it the way i have it right now (420x1 at 8 ohms, sub wired in series?)

your amp puts out 300x2 @ 4 ohms and 420x2 @ 2 ohms
if the amp puts out 300x2 @ 4 ohms, then bridged, it'd put out 600x1 @ 8 ohms.

amps put out exactly the same power combined at 4 ohms stereo as they do at 8 ohms bridged, basically because they're doing the same thing both ways.
the BCAE1 section on bridging has diagrams to show the wave forms to explain how it works, but bridging essntially uses the positive power supply voltage rail of one channel to produce the top half of the output sine wave, and the negative voltage rail of the power supply from the opposite channel to produce the other (bottom) half of the sine wave output from the amp, so you're getting the same power.
this is also why amps are only stable to twice the load when bridged that they are stable to when in stereo mode.
