Okay, so you hear everyone say that the alpine type r's are amazing subs for the price and you see that a lot of people are buying them.But the main question i want answered is,
ARe people just buying these for high spl, or do these subs also have good sound quality?

(I listen to mostly rock)

The Type R's weren't designed to be SPL subs by any means. They are what I would consider a good SQL sub.

right on. so good sound quality, thats what im after.
also i found a kicker kx400.1 for sale on ebay for 135$ which i am probably giong to pick up. do you think that would be adequate power for the sub.
the amp is 400-450rms and the sub is 500rms.

would that work out okay?

i've got a '93 Lude, i just bought one type r 12", and the kicker 400.1 off e-bay for a combined total of $250!!!! this is awesome, i cannot wait until they arrive!!!!!

now i just need to find the right box and ill be kicking HARD!

anyone who has a type R, i need suggestions for best sound quality and still good spl.

sealed, ported , bandpass??

i havent looked at the t/s of the type r for a while but id say you might want to go with a sealed cause i think they like them better. make sure you get a custom box built for it though.

how much does that usually cost?

and

how hard is that to do your self?

will it sound a lot different from a standard box?

1: sealed about 100 ported about 150 giver or take the place.
2: not hard if you know alot about wood working and have the tools and mdf and plans.
3: hell yes its night and day differnece.

two more questions

if i find a box that fits the alpine specs for volume and size and all that then one of those will work just as well as a custom box right?

is there an enormous sound quality difference b/w the sealed and the ported or is it just a small difference?

prefab boxes(99% of the time) dont even compare to a well built custom box..
sealed will normally get you tighter bass while the ported can get boomy. w/ a ported box, u usually need less power to get the sub moving.
