Zapco...

Post by racerraul »

Just wondering if anyone has seen the new Zapco products coming out.

In particular, the Zapco DC amps. I have been made an offer I could not refuse, thus hope to be giving them a whirl before SBN in my Saturn.

Here is a thread with all the details...

Zapco is always top notch in quality.

I thought in 2005, they were getting a bit behind the times... and their component sets were nothing short of a failure (even reviews in magazines they were paid advertisers in were... less than flattering to say the least ;) )

In particular, I was looking for an Alpine F#1 status digital processing system that would let me do high-end Xover, EQ and signal distribution - from a controller in my hand at the front seat (how else could you make A/B comparisions, on minor adjustments like crossover slope? By the time you get out of the car, make the adjustment, and get back in, you are operating on memory...)
And Zapco had no such offerings.

So, while late to the game, 2006 Zapco (what do you know) HAS just that, with the DCS line, and with a PC interface that looks to afford additional interactivity and system analysis. Those look very cool, IMO.

I just want to sit in my front seat, in listening position, and make tweaks I can try to hear without so much as moving my head... not getting out of the car, walking around, making the adjustment arbitrarily because it's a guess - I can't hear it as I tweak it - then walk back around... urg. I always hated that.

...that being said, I still am not sure I like a solution that mandates my choice of amplifier.

Let's say I "can't live without it" on the processor, but really didn't like the amplifiers for some reason. Then were are you? :(

There's the DSP-6SL, for sure - that would be my choice.
But since we're stuck at 6 channels with it, for my system I'd need two... and you can imagine the price tag.

THAT begs comparison against the $500 RF 3Sixty.2 processor, also.
...if for no other reason, than I'd rather tweak holding an acoustically non-invasive Palm OS palmpilot, than my laptop computer - even though I own a laptop and not a Palm, at the moment (where's the Windows CE version, Rockford! :D )
;)

I was not aware of the RF offering... had to check them out & I must agree that they look not only nice, but the price tag isn't too outrageous...

The Zapco DSP-6SL isn't out yet & I don't know what the price tag on it will be... Knowing Zapco... probably up there near the moon orbit. And like you... a pair of the DSP-6SL would be what I would need. I do like the Stackable solution they provide, being able to control up to 16 stacked devices via the laptop client.

You may want to look into the JBL processor that should be out this year...

or you could "settle" for the alpine 701 for 300 off ebay. 600 total with the 2din controller.
as a side note, zapco also has a head unit that i believe is made by denon.

There has been some inconsistencies in the 701 combos when using the analog inputs. Some reports of noise (hiss) when using the analog inputs... some do not experience this... the real beauty would be to be able to mod Alpine units to get a digital output & use AInet only for Changers, RAdio & Volume control.

Werewolf over @ ECA got a hold of a service manual, & tried to figure out the source of the problem... instead he found out Alpine could have done a much better job with it... Worth checking out the Technical section if interested. I believe he has also gone throught the F#1 proc as well...

Geo,

Here are some more indepth details about what canbe done with the DSP-6SL...
http://forum.elitecaraudio.com/showthre ... did=126195

I'm supposed to get a copy of the laptop client to control the amps... hopefully I'll have it soon, since I will not buy the amps unless I get a simulated test drive with the sotware...

I'm a longtime JBL fan myself, many of their products have historically been impressive (DDD has some advantages over XBL^2 as well, but unfortunately huge implementation expense and lack of scalability as handicaps as well), I love the GTi components and subs.

At the shop I'm working at however, JBL isn't one of the brands sold, neither is Alpine - so I'm pretty much politically locked into the RF product. :D

Which really isn't a problem with me, since in objective terms, it was also my front-runner since I caught wind of it late summer.

The JBL piece looks nice - 8 channels is ALMOST enough! It's enough to cover the entire SQ system entirely, just not the SPL system.
