I want to get the best SQ possible (within my limits :P) out of my elevation components, and system in general. right now the mids are in the doors and the tweeters are mounted on the a-pillars, facing each other. it sounds kind of nice but im going to go on a limb and say it could sound better. i'm looking into kick panels but i don't know if i'll have the space. i have about 10lbs of fiberglass cloth/mat & other needed stuff availble right now and would obviously be able to get more. maybe you guys can lend a helping hand? My amp for them is a Alpine MRP-F240 that does 100x2 bridged. Cd player is a Pioneer Premeire DEH-550MP

edit: forgot to ask. one of my crossovers was damaged in shipping, one of the little coil thingeys was knocked loose. could that cause any issues with SQ or what? it still seems to function properly.
move the components to the kick pods so the tweets and mids are aligned (in phase) and equidistant from your head. Then look at using a 1/3 octave EQ to tweak the sound curve after that to your liking.. and get the XPO repaired or replaced.
Knocked loose as in off the crossover or it's still on there and is just hanging on? I would imagine if it was completely knocked off, you wouldn't have a complete circuit and it wouldn't work at all. I guess if it's still working then maybe you should somehow fasten it back to whatever board that it should be fastened to in the crossover.
the part of the crossover is just hanging off. electrically it looks fine, wire is still attached to the board, the spool-thing is just came unglued. (sorry for for the terminology used, or lack of) basically just hanging loose :P i'm possibly leaning towards the head unit or amp as a problem because it seems to be coming out of one side of the car... i wish i could find a way to check that, but i have no other amp or cd player right now.
Maybe when you knocked that choke loose, it actually broke the thin wire that goes from the coil to the PCB, and the only thing making it look like it isn't broken, might be the wire insulation around the copper? Or if not to that extreme, the wire may well be weakened, or more importantly, a cold solder joint, which can appear fine at first glance, but completely hose an electrical connection.
I spent time back in the Eighties working in a little computer shop, where I did repair on old C64 and Atari products, and 9 times out of 10 when drives came in, it was a cold solder joint on the board, or a specific component that was prone to failure on some models.
If you had a handy can of freeze, a scope, a power supply, and a bit of know-how, you could test this whole theory, but all in all, it may be easier just to get that XO repaired. Remember, the crossover being run near the signal path wiring is one of easiest and most assured ways to induce noise in a system.
well, i have heard the difference between a set of installed components on pillars and doors, then moved to the kicks. wow what a difference. the bass is way more noticable and has much more of a cleaner sound and it gets alot more punchy. you can actualy feel it
i need get rid of my noise issue first.i'm giong to run negative wires off the battery instead of grounding to the trunk.
how do i ground the rca's? i'll check and see fi the damaged crossover is on the speaker that the nosie is coming from. noise only comes from one side of the car... so could that possibly be a speaker wire thing? i would assume it'd be soemthign with the factory speaker wiring if that was the case? if i can rule out the ground & crossover, and possibly wiring then i guess if its none of those, then i can assume either the amp or HU.
oh, are you runing a sererate amp to push your speakers? or are they run off the HU? i was thinking you had some comps runing off an amp or something. If so you'd already have new wire you ran from the amp to the speakers, there wouldnt be any runing to the HU. If your geting noise from one side i'd say its some kind of interference. Do you have a good set of rcas? and make sure they havnt been damaged at all. Also make sure all your actual wire connections are done well. That way you have no loose wire touching anything.
