throw in a subwoofer?

so ive been thinking about buying a system for a while now but i just dont have the funds.. its a fairly old car(1993 camry) so i dont want it to be flashy and all. i already have a HU(pioneer DEH-P5500MP) and im very happy with it.

i was wondering if it would be a decent idea if i just leave the stock speakers the way they are, fade it to the front, and use the HPF while i buy a sub amp to push possibly one or two type R's.. do you think that the subs would overpower the stock speakers? i dont really want to replace everything, considering the car will probably only be used for a couple more years at most. any ideas?

I would say go for some new speakers..esp. seeing the car is a 93, the stock speakers cant be in the greatest of shape. you can find a good cheap pair on e-bay...

the type R's probably will overpower em, if it were a newer car it might not be that bad , but its a 93 camry.

hey i have that HU, pretty cool. It does have the SW output so you'd be in good shape, only problem is it only has one other RCA output, so you could only hook up a two channel amp. (if you want to fade) So what you might want to do is power the stock rear speaekrs with the HU and buy a decent 2channel amp with some nice new front speakers and fade to the front. That could only cost you about 500$ (350amp/150speakers $$ ) for a decent setup. Hell of a lot better than the stock, ask if you wanna know some brands to look into.

as far as the subs if you upgrade your speakers those should sound quite nice...

you might be on the verge of upgrading your electrical system though :-/
i dunno what RMS the type r-s are but im assuming around 300-350 and with front speakers thats probably gonna be like 100wrms...so you're loooking at what, 800ish tops? /12...i dunno, you came here asking about a sub and now I have you upgrading your electrical system, sorry :)

yea, the type R's are 300W RMS.. i read somewhere that most electrical systems can take up to about 600W RMS w/o changing out the alt. BUT, you never know. before, i was planning to get the CDT classics from thezeb but still havent gotten around to it. if i get those front CDT components, amp them, and just power the rear from the HU, will the front be way too loud? i dont think i can afford both new speakers and some subwoofers. also, how does that SW output work? straight hookup to a sub and powered by the HU?

replace the front speakers, then add the amp and sub(s).
that's your best bet.
front speakers will make a world of difference in your front stage for vocals.
and really, what is music all about, right?
