I would ask Seagate if you could get an upgraded model. maybe just pay the difference in cost or something, explain this will be the 3rd drive of this type that has failed and you don't want another one of these models.

Thats what my goal is. According to seagate there is no upgrade available for this size...

And when I did the return they value the drive at like $270. So to upgrade through them Im guessing I might get arse raped.

This is my alternative Im orderign Friday:

You have seriously bad luck with computers. Man. Don't pick up gardening

j/k, but that sucks tho. I too have only had good luck with Seagate. Most of the WD's I've had were decent. The Maxtors aren't that great tho.

I'll x2 the Seagate. I have only Seagate drives in this computer and I haven't had a problem at all. I've got a 500GB (ST3500630NS) and a 750GB (ST3750330AS).

Must just be bad luck or that particular product, or specific run of products, has a manufacturing problem. Who knows. Hope you have better luck with another drive tho.

FWIW, I have been in the computer industry selling hardware since 1995, with exception of the last year. I have sold every brand ever made. WD, Seagate, Maxtor, Samsung, Fujitsu, Hitachi, IBM, Quantum, Toshiba, Conner, you name it.

That said, I have never known one brand to be any more reliable than the other. Every brand has its flawed drives. Less flaws recently than back in the 10 ~ 20 GB days. I have historicaly preferred WD drives based on value and familiarity, but also have a Maxtor and a Seagate in my home PCs.

The issue you are having with the Seagate drive, are you sure the issue is the drive? Have you tried any other drives on the same cable & connector? Have you tested your PSU? There are more things that can lead to this issue than a simple drive failure. Just trying to help.

I havent tested the PSU and have no way to do it that I know of.

I have tried a different SATA connector on a different SATA plug on the MB and same thing.

Ive been in contact with Seagate. I told the tech support guy that its making a clicking noise on start up then says "DISK BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND HIT ENTER..." He told me that indicates the Hard Drive has failed and needs to be replaced. Yet I can still get it to start after a few tries.

I know its about to die though... This one lasted a atleast 5 months. The other one only lasted 2-3 months or so.

I sent a response back asking it to be forwarded to a manager or someone of authority.

I asked to be upgraded at Reasonable cost to any one of 3 other models. If not then to have Seagate foot the bill on the second defective drive they have given me.

If they dont go along with that Im going to reply with: "So you expect me to pay $20 every 5 months when your inferior product dies?"

Im about tired of dealing with their support staff. The drives shit and its a bad design obviously. Just upgrade me to something that doesnt suck...

FWIW,

My last letter to Seagate made it through. They are shipping me another replacement drive at their cost.

Doesnt say if it will be a direct replacement or an upgraded version, but anythings better than the malfunctioning one I have now.

I hope to get it, load windows onto it and all my programs then just transfer my files drive to drive. Hopefully it gets here before this one dies for good... lol

Ryan, if the replacement drive does not work as well, I would highly consider a new PSU. The reason why the drive is not spinning up could be from lack of power. Are you using a Molex to SATA power adapter or anything like that? What brand and model of PSU are you running? That is what my inner tech would suspect first.
