Thinking about MECP

Been thinking about getting mecp certified. Looked into it a little bit this eventing and the basic level study guide is 30 bucks, and the test is 60 I beleive and it is good for two years. Anybody on here certified?? I'm thinking pretty seriously about it. what do you guys think??

I'm gold certified, and it's worth the cost if you plan to work in the field, otherwise, probably not.

actually I am planning on working in the field. I started last year, building boxes, and installing head units. So yeah I think I will go for it.

I guess its a good thing.

One thing I just want to point out is that every Best Buy installer is MECP certified. So what Im trying to say is just because you have this certification doesnt mean people wont still question.

Just like I know most people here would cringe at the thought of dropping off their car to best Buy for an install...lol

THeres no negatives in having this. Probably worth the money.

You know, I thought of that. Not so much the best buy installer thing, but the fact that people will or will not question me even after the fact. The main reason I am doing it is, I like expanding my horizons. I love car audio, and want to become as knowledgeable as I can about it. You are right none of us would even think about leaving our cars at a best buy (unless Chris was the one doing the work), but I aint gonna be a best buy either. I want to/ will do quality work and if people want me they will get me. And I think the MECP is just a bonus . Its really not all about me, it is about the people I do work for knowing that yeah maybe they can get Joe down the street to do a job for 20 bucks, or they can get me to do it for a little more money and have a better outcome all the way around.

Oh yeah Justin, right now I am planning on getting a building on my lot here we got about 1 1/2 acres, and working outta it. I will gow bigger as the need arises. I am also looking at getting a job at a decent shop also. Still kinda up in the air.

I went through this same dilemma with myself about 3 years ago... I decided to put it on hold... and now 3 years later I have decided against it... I am going to be getting my licensing in Real Estate instead... Greater profit margin... besides ... I'm already certified in Microsoft, and a Board Certified Teacher of History in PA and CT...

If you are going to pursue the job market as an installer go for it, and get the add on certifications

I took the basic installers test years ago (1990) and got the certification. Needless to say it is now expired. Unless you're in the industry as a living, it isn't worth the cash spent. I do recomend taking some classes at one of the install schools to learn hands on. Especially custom work (glassing, pods, integration, ect.). There are many installers out there, but I'm seeing less custom work being done. Not sure if it's because the shop wont do it (no experience) of there's just not a market for it.

Anyway, going through the school, you'll get "HANDS ON EXPERIENCE" and not just a paper saying you passed a test, and when it's all said and done.....you'll have that cert. to boot!

For me and the test, it was all about me....I just wanted to see if I could pass it. Now I have forgotten most of it, so I have the book for referance and it does get used every now and then.

If you're wanting to do it for a living......GO FOR IT. If you'll be in another trade, just get the book and read it.

you guys have made some good points that I really didn't think about. Maybe i will just get the book and read it, aint really made up my mind yet.
