The Finished Product & Taming the Tweeters

Post by audiocr381ve »

Well, the system is finally finished. The Phoenix Gold RSD comps perform decently. Being that I'm in the record engineering business to some degree, it takes a lot to impress me. I've mixed and mastered 3 albums, 1 professionally. Many times I'm behind studio monitors that cost between 5k to 15k that are so true to the reproduction of an instrument it's scary :surprised All that to say I come with a fairly trained ear.

With that being said, the Phoenix Gold RSD are a steal for $90 (amazon.com) as far as value and quality goes, although I'm having trouble taming their tweets. They do lack a certain warmth that comes along with higher end speakers. When I'm listening to acoustic guitars on songs like Til Kingdom Come by Coldplay, they don't reproduce the guitars that accurately. The toms are lost in the midbass as well. They are harsh around the frequencies that crash cymbals hit. I suppose adding more processing is the answer with out buying a new set, but I'd like to go a cheaper route if possible.

Somebody commented on the bandpass the JL 8" is in, I so agree. The bottom end is loose for lack of better words. I'll fix that soon.

Anyway, I need help on taming the tweets. What do you guys suggest?

Oh yea, pics of the finished product.

you can do it electronically (eliminates phase issues) if you have a signal processor that can cut about 3dB from the upper end, or you can go the L-Pad route and build passive filters to trim the tweeters.
