Please help stereo shop messed something up

I took my car to have some highs installed, i already have kenwood amp and 12 in subs and a sony cd player, i felt like i had plenty of base but i wanted to hear more of the actual words to the music not just the base, when i had the cd player and amp along with the subs installed, i never had the speakers in the door changed from the factory ones.

So the shop i took it to said they would install speakers and amp for highs, i paid 400.00 ,, when i returned to pick up my car.. I was told that i should upgrade the cd unit or get a equalizer, i asked why and was told so you can control your sub, i said no i can control my sub from my cd unit. The guy said no we had to use that output (not sure) what he said they used it for, so i discussed prices of new cd unit and told them i would call them when i was ready to do it, i get into my car and leave (at the same time the shop was closed the guy also got into his car and left) my music was on, after driving i turned down the music and stopped at a red light, as i started to go on green there was this awful high pitched whining sound it was terrible, when i would slow down the sound would go do down, when i accelerated the pitch got higher, and then i touched the dial that i normally would to control sub , usually it would say sub level and i could go up or down, the option is not even there now, what do i do? Any help please and will be greatly appreciated, my husband passed away a couple years ago and this was his car, my daughter just got her license and i am trying to make it nice for her, the car (suv) is a 2003 ford escape xlt,,

Sounds like you have engine noise entering the system. You may have always had it, but just couldn't hear it through the subs.
What you can try and do to fix it, is verify all the wiring. Couple things to check, make sure the ground wire to the amp is short and connected tightly to a clean piece of metal.

How are the RCA wires, I usually try and route them so they are not along side the power wire.

What model Sony stereo do you have?
