Morel

Post by cdj »

I don't have any experience with the Morel Dotech's, but had a set of the Morel Integra coaxs for about 4 months.

The best description of Morel speakers that I've heard is that they are "smooth and polite". That was my experience with the Integras. At first I was pleased with them, but after a few weeks began to find them boring. They were very nice, natural sounding, but just too "polite" for my taste. For me, they lacked any real emotion. Not what I would call lively speakers.

It all depends on your tastes.

Morels have a characteristic sweet and warm sound, they're neutral and revealing. They're similar to Dynaudio if you've ever heard them. These speakers are similar in sound to what you would find in home audio systems, they aren't aggressive with detail, if you like the aggressive detail of bright tweeters and punchy mids, these are not your speakers. They do not lack detain anywhere, it just isn't forwardly brought out like in many sets, some percieve it as dull, some love the transparency of the mids. They tend to be power hungry, if you feed them some power they'll really wake up. The neutrality will please you on certain types of music, mainly well recorded material that centers around acoustic and vocal performance, such as jazz, soft rock and pop, and so forth. Due to their revealing nature, they will also make flaws in the recording that much more apparent, poorly recorded material such as some heavy rock and rap aren't as pleasing on sets like these because they don't spice up the music any and don't give the characteristic upper midrange edge and tweeter sharpness that many other sets do. The Dotech components are not an off axis set, they are somewhat tricky to get the install just right due to the shallow slope crossovers, best results will be had with a custom installation via kickpanels or angled door locations.

"Due to their revealing nature, they will also make flaws in the recording that much more apparent.."

i can attest to this with my Iridiums. many of my CD's are going to waste because of the differences in good recordings and bad recordings. I put in one cd and start to think that my settings on my eq have faultered or maybe i damaged my drivers.
then i slide my reference cd, N.E.R.D., and the system jumps back to "i can't believe this" status. feel kinda like Neo w/the blue and red pill. what sounded good before has been revealed as a poor recording, and what was truly well recorded sounds so much better.
still tweaking my system to compensate for the disparities.
on the up side, i am making a mental catalog of the good and poor mixers in the music industry.

I can agree 100%. I almost refuse to listen to even MP3's anymore.

verrry much like my DynAudios, and also, like my Dyns, tricky to position, very revealing which is why I stick to good CDs and MFSL gold CDs mostly for listening, and they like power to bring out the real detail and ability of the drivers.
I like jazz and acoustic performances (think unplugged) though, so they're ideal for that, in much the same way my martin logans are at home. you can tell my tastes by the similar response characteristics of the speakers I use both at home and in cars, but like Jon pointed out.. they aren't for everyone. The Dyns use a shallow 6dB slope XO as well, and that makes imaging very tricky when positioning speakers. I'm actually giving thought to rebuilding the crossovers myself to give a steeper slope to the 3-ways, but I need to find a good source for high end caps and chokes before I start drawing anything up.

anyway, if you go with the dotechs, give serious thought to handmade fiberglass kickpods for positioning, and have someone make them who understands taking the time to properly align the speakers before glassing teh pods, so you get the right soundstage and imaging from them to make them really shine.
the kickpods will give the signal path length you need to help balance out left and right time alignment for ideal imaging too.
