box type?

ok, my friend has a Sony 12" sub, I know, I know, they suck, but his parents are really strict about him spending his money on audio stuff

, I warned him to not waste his money, but he brought up the point that at least one crappy 12 is better than no 12 at all. Well, he has a 4 door Oldsmobile Sierra Cutlass, midsize car, large trunk, not like a Crown Vic, but bigger than normal. Anyways, I would really appreciate it if you guys could help me out by giving some advice on what type of box he should get. I dont know if he is going for spl or sq, chances are that he is looking for spl, but I would like to know what kind of box he would need for spl, and what kind for sq. Thanks for all the help guys!

Ported for spl and sealed for sq..by the way..where in florida are you?

northwest florida. I live in pensacola, my friend lives in Pace, its a small outlying city near pensacola. by the way, if you check my stats or w/e, you can see my subs, and I was just wondering, is there any combination of box size, configuration or anything that will make my solobarics get better SQ?? they are the older round kind, I didnt want the square ones with the uneven stress points, so I went with used round ones

Im not familiar with the old solobarics, but i do have the new ones. Generally with subs, a smaller, sealed box tends to have better sq where a larger ported box is for spl. but in the case of the new solo's, sq sux. If you have the patience (and money) make a few boxes and figure out what you like the best. But it sounds like you should stick with sealed.

old round Solo's are excellent i think.

Old round Solos were excellent subwoofers, worked very well in a small sealed box. They were actually pretty iffy if you didn't use a small sealed box, just the way they designed the suspension of it.

how small of a sealed box, I have looked and I cant find much in the way of specs for them, and I bought them 2nd hand...so I don't have the paperwork...

any more suggestions for what my friend should use?

Try calling kicker and they should be able to tell you what the recommended box size is. just have the sub sitting next to you incase they need a serial number or part number.

for the old ones, try 1.5 cf or less.
