i would go 0 gauge for the Big3 upgrade whether i planned to one day install a ho alt or not and then install a 300amp or so Inline fuse on the power wire from battery to alt..

but thats just me and some people prefer to not fuse the wire but i would rather be safe then sorry

Not only a short few inches from battery to alt on all cars. for instance my Seville has its alt all the way at the bottom of the engine area in the front on the right side and to run my alt to battery power wire it took about three feet which is exactly 36 inches

Well, you could look into Arc, Elevation, maybe even look at tc sounds which makes eclipse, sound splinter, and many other brands subs. My friend has an Arc audio 10" Foose and i think that thing sounds amazing!! I think he paid in the area of $150 and it gets as loud as my brothers older JL w3. I think Elevation subs have great sq. My friend has 2 12" Comps, i think they are in the area of $130 a piece, and they sound awesome and i think my Execution has amazing sq, and i think people who have heard/used the Execution would agree. Justin had an Eclipse sw7... and i thought it sounded real good for a cheaper sq sub, probably equivalent to the Foose.

For that kinda money you could get an Alphasonik 800series 12" Dual 2 or 4 ohm w/ 900w RMS.

I dunno where you are going your sub from but here are some more to look into.

Arc Audio Arc series
Image Dynamic IDQ
Elevatin Audio SQX
TC sounds TC2
Eclipse sw7 (Had for $150 or so) PM Justin from D.
RE SE (on sell, PM Sinister Audio)

Just a few I can think of right now. Before you go out and buy, do some research and explore your options.
